In modern day Chicago, a rebellion is brewing. The magical community has always thrived by maintaining one rule: keep it in the family. By disguising their powers, and the fact that anybody can learn to do magic, magicians have been able to become celebrities, presidents, and business tycoons. Unfortunately for them, when Gwen Olivenza’s rebel parents are found dead at the hands of elites, she vows to take up their quest to bring magic to the masses. And it’s not in her nature to fail.

Gwen, an illusionist, wants to make her parents proud. Sonia, an empathic, wants her best friend to find peace with her parents’ death. Milo, memorist, wants revenge on the society that disowned him after he showed kindness to an outsider. Brier Banks is that outsider; a Black nature witch from New York who grew up without magic, until Milo saw her natural talent. She wants an adventure. Finnian Finkele, a slow-talking Brazilian medic magician from Georgia, feels responsible for a tragic childhood accident that killed his best friend and blinded him in one eye. He just wants to be part of something. And Theo? The arrogant self-taught technology magician wants what every brooding teenager wants: to overthrow an oligarchy… and maybe get under Gwen’s skin in the process.

To decipher her parents coded journals and destroy the system that killed them, Gwen will do anything—no matter the cost to friend or foe. But perhaps the famous Olivenzas weren’t what they appeared, and no amount of magic will help Gwen if she can’t learn to see the truth of her past.
